7000 Bracelets for Hope: "hidradenitis supppurativa" HS Disease

When Susan Kennedy of Sue Beads shared that Lisa James (Manager of Community Development for Global Genes/Rare) asked her to host a blog hop, as they were in need of at least 40 bracelets right now, I was excited to participate in two ways: sharing as an artist creating a bracelet and sharing abut my experience as a Global Genes 7000 Bracelet recipient.

Global Genes 7000 Bracelets for Hope: the beautiful bracelet I received! The artist is unknown, but so appreciated!

I have Verneuil's Disease, or HS. It is so rare, and orphaned, it doesn't actually have a name, although we HS sufferers have found each other because of the internet and worked very hard to connect despite not having an "official" disease name, just the name of a symptom, "hidradenitis supppurativa". The disease was first reported in the 1800's by a French physician, Verneuil, and in many European countries "Verneuil's Disease" is another name for HS.

Although I've been diagnosed with the debilitating and severely painful disease for over 15 years, I've been suffering for many, many more because rare diseases are so difficult to diagnose. Rare diseases are "orphan" diseases -- meaning no pharmaceutical company has picked up research for the disease because there simply isn't enough money to be made taking on rare diseases. Without pharmaceutical company research, rare diseases go un-researched, and are thus completely unknown to most doctors. One of the surveys I took as a recipient in the 7000 bracelets for hope campaign focused on diagnosis. It was comforting to participate in a medical questionnaire that understood inherently the many number of doctors it might take for diagnosis, and asked important questions about what kind of doctors actually helped to diagnosis the disease. This kind of interest and serious advocacy by Global Genes is such a relief compared to the usual invisibility and marginalization HS sufferers and those with other rare diseases experience.

My beautiful Global Genes bracelet gives me STRENGTH from HOPE

A serious factor in rare diseases is no pharmaceutical company interest means no medical research which means no cure. But it also means no treatments, no relief to suffering, and subjecting oneself or one's family or children to risky shots in the dark. As someone who has learned through the years to be assertive and to be an HS advocate, I thought most of my serious medical scares were behind me until this past week. I encountered an E.R. physician who simply would not hear me nor my spouse about what to do! And while I don't want to go into details because this campaign is about HOPE,  his ignorance and refusal to listen to us as "ordinary" persons -- along with the lack of information on my rare disease -- seriously put my life in jeopardy. I'm still recovering from a very debilitating flare and the terrifying, powerless experience of emergency medical "treatment" -- or lack of treatment, or mis-treatment at E.R  (while my "safe" doctor was away for the Holiday) but the experience brings to center the vital importance of rare disease awareness: the arts, community, non-profit organizations such as Global Genes, and powerful base-root movements are imperative to those who need medical solutions, treatment, and life-lines.

"HS Life - Series 2 (W.I.P.) - Sketch - The Cure" by artist Alaric LaBrie.                                                 (Used with permission. Photo © Alaric LaBrie. All rights reserved. )                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   "Inspired by the recent events but not directed at anyone company or another in particular just letting my frustrations at the overall situation and lack of real meaningful options for HS suffers at this point in time.

It was my goal to show the desperation of our situations." -- Alaric LaBrie

  Desperation. Awareness. Hope.

The artwork of Alaric Labrie is deeply moving to many HS sufferers. Labrie's representations of living with HS are raw, honest, and urgent. Living with HS, or any rare disease, is often difficult to express in words. Sharing the severe pain and morbidity of HS with physicians, friends, lovers can be exhausting and extremely difficult. The language of the body becomes a medium of meaning; LaBrie's powerful art portraits of HS and HS sufferers confront the disease courageously while comforting those who suffer with honor and dignity. I highly recommend exploring all of Alaric Labrie's powerful, imperative art.

There's much work to be done. As I've gathered resources for my blog hop post I've realized the work is immense, and intense. I've just sat and cried and cried several times today thinking of it. And thinking of one of my daughter's having Stage one Verneuil's is frightful, and having lost my other daughter with Stage three is heartbreaking. So rather than make this an educational post about Verneuil's, or turn to the tragedy or urgency persons with rare diseases are faced with; rather than posting and listing groups and resources for HS as I'd planned, continuing to work to "end" the disease -- fighting -- I'm going to just be gentle with myself, let my body continue to recover, and let the arts, the power of creativity, the energy and power of connection move and empower today.

Ombre blue silk and satin woven Swarovski crystal bracelets are simple, yet soft.

I created two simple woven stack blue bracelets with Sherri Stokey's "Easy Macrame Stack Bracelets" tutorial. They are soft and comfortable, which I thought might be soothing for some recipients, and the sizes may work as a parent - child set. The gorgeous Swarovski crystals sparkle brilliantly.  In addition, I may also wire wrap and create a more dramatic blue sari bracelet, like my Humblebeads Bare Branches jewelry, in addition to the crystal bracelets woven in silk and satin.

My Humblebeads Bare Branches jewelry ensemble becomes a necklace or bracelet

I'll be sharing more about my story and my Bracelet of Hope at the Global Genes website. If you would also like to create and donate a bracelet, or if you would like to request one for yourself or on behalf of a loved one, please contact Global Genes Bracelets of Hope.

This is a blog hop :) Enjoy the many bracelets of HOPE created for Global Genes by the following artists:

Celebrate Small Business Saturday with Window Shop Blog Hop Winners!

Happy Small Business Saturday! Here's hats off to all the Window Shop Blog Hop participants and to the small businesses owners who donated prizes to support handcrafted!

I'd like to give a big shout out to everyone who shared their own or their favorite handcrafted shops for the Window Shop Holiday Blog Hop! The artistry of the participants and the many beautiful and very cool products shared for Holiday shopping is the best of the best. Everyone was also very kind when I had to delay announcing winners due to my health, and for that great kindness I have a special surprise for all participants!

The brilliant Cindy Lichfield McConkey

I also want to give a shout out and thank you to Cindy Lichfield McConkey for her generosity to the jewelry artists community! Meeting Cindy was one of the best gifts in my life because she is incredibly positive, funny, uplifting and kind. I like her immensely!

The brilliant Barbara Carleton
And a shout out to Barbara Carleton of Bejeweled software, who, like Cindy, is also a brilliant inventor! Both women are geniuses at creating excellent products for jewelry designers, bead artists and crafters. Cindy's Cloud Dome photography products are great for anyone taking serious photographs because they create even lighting -- no more reflections, shadows, and uneven lighting. Barbara's Bejeweled Software will accurately cost and price jewelry, organize components and venders, track and manage customers, organize tax information, and create catalogs.

You'll find pages for both the Cloud Dome on Facebook and Bejeweled on Facebook, too.
And finally, if you are a winner of their products, please considering showing your support of Cindy or Barbara by blogging about their small businesses. Enjoy the prizes! Winners were randomly matched with prizes using random.org.

And now that Jewel School has introduced flex-pays (yes!!), let's hope the Holidays can be made even sweeter with flex pays on Cloud Domes. You can  purchase the Cloud Dome directly at Cloud Dome, through Barbara Carlteton at Bejeweled,or at Jewel School.

Giving Thanks

Giving Thanks is something I think often about. Years ago, I by chance saw a wonderful thing: QVC had Dr. Wayne Dyer on as a guest and he was speaking about his new book and the power of intention. And as almost happens when Dr. Wayne Dyer shares, he was speaking to something big, touching people, changing lives. That which is his soul was connecting with other souls: old souls, new souls, tired out souls, yearning souls, content souls, scared souls, happy souls, wondering souls, re-membering souls. That kind of connection is big because who we are is so much more than we often realize.

It's a little like going bowling.

For a while we are a bowler -- whether a good bowler or a bad bowler is insignificant -- we are a bowler! And yet while we are busy being bowlers we are still, in essence, so much more. We are someone's children, perhaps we are parents, or teachers, we are bowlers yet still artists, writers,  bloggers, spouses, lovers, friends. We are more than just people too.

Being a person is like being the bowler. We are physical  and non-physical: vibrant, moving,  expansive energy  each with a unique perspective. And we are each uniquely contributing as we experience. We may sometimes encounter contrast, but by knowing what we don't want, we can figure out what it is we do want.

And there's big power there. In knowing what we are wanting. We ask, it is given. Every time, no exceptions. We are creators. Knowing what we do want (then not focusing on it being missing) is our part of the process. We grow and become more. We are souls ever expanding. We'll never get it done and we'll never get it right. It's what makes us infinite.

We are meant to focus, which brings me back to Dr. Dyer, giving thanks, and The Power of Intention. The idea is that by being a math to Source, God, universal energy we manifest beautifully. What does it mean to be a match to Source? No more ordinary, but on to the extraordinary. And all it takes is five little words: I want to feel good.

If you use your emotions as a special, one-of-a-kind internal guidance system, you will have constant feedback about how you are looking at things and if you are a match or no match to Source. By simply being happy, you have put yourself int the position of accepting all that you've asked for that has been given, and your impact on others will shift into the extraordinary also. Thoughts that feel bad are bad: they are a no match to Source and keep you from your intention. Thoughts that give you feelings of relief are pivoting ones that help you turn downstream. Focus on thoughts that feel good for just 30 days, and you'll be surprised how incredibly your life will change.

You'll find:

Your presence instills calmness.
Your presence leaves others energized.
Your presence allows others to feel better about themselves.
Your presence allows others to feel unified.
Your presence instills a purpose.
Your presence allows others to trust in authentic personal connections.
Your presence inspires others to greatness.
Your presence aligns others with beauty.
Your presence instills health rather than sickness.

Raising your own energy level, intending to feel good, and focusing on what thoughts feel like in order to use your guidance system to be a match to Source creates an extraordinary life and benefits others. Write rampages of appreciation. Let go of the obstacles to being a match with Source:

Thinking about what's missing in your life.
Thinking about the circumstances of your life.
Thinking about what has always been.
Thinking about what "they" want for you.

Using your emotional guidance system
The Emotional Guidance Scale by Abraham-Hicks from the book, "Ask and It's Given" is a great way to monitor your relationship  with and match to Source, your soul's intention. Simply notice how your internal thoughts fit on the scale. Change your focus with the intent that nothing matters more than that you feel good.

1 Joy/Knowledge/Empowerment/Freedom/Love/Appreciation
2 Passion 3 Enthusiasm/Eagerness/Happiness
4 Positive Expectation/Belief
5 Optimism
6 Hopefulness
7 Contentment
8 Boredom
9 Pessimism
10 Frustration/Irritation/Impatience
11 "Overwhelment"
12 Disappointment
13 Doubt
14 Worry
15 Blame
16 Discouragement
17 Anger
18 Revenge
19 Hatred/Rage
20 Jealousy
21 Insecurity/Guilt/Unworthiness
22 Fear/Grief/Depression/Despair/Powerlessness

If you find yourself thinking thoughts that bring you grief or despair, reach for thoughts higher up on the scale. Getting angry, for example, would be a relief to grief. From anger, move to blame or frustration, then on to contentment and then hope -- now, oh now your in the vicinity of "the vortex" -- once you are near hope, you're aligned with Source, you are a match to Intention, you're letting in all that you've asked for, and you have a profound impact on others as an uplifter.

As Dr. Dyer reminds us, "keep in mind that what you think and do affects all other people." So, be happy. Reach for thoughts that feel good. Appreciate and give thanks, relish your worthiness, love, knowledge and freedom.

Art Jewelry Elements is Having an Open House

Look for the November 23, 2012  posts
One of my favorite blogs, Art Jewelry Elements, is having an open house today! There are festive posts and fun giveaways to enjoy.

What makes AJE so cool?  It's a collective work!  The AJE blog is written by various contributors, and edited by the gifted Jennifer Cameron. AJE posts are written by many of our community's finest jewelry and bead artists. AJE is a rich, contemporary, diverse, and leading edge blog on jewelry and bead arts.

Today's open house has posts by various artists. I have to say my heart is pitter-pattering for the frosty snow white beads by SueBeads, and I'm proud I have my own little bit of heaven from Tree Wings Studio. My little woodland snowy owl will be used in very special jewelry. So enjoy the open house, browse shops, and have a fun start to creating this season. This is our special time to shine and be grateful for each other, beautiful artists. Happy Holidays!

Beads of Courage Art Charm Exchange, Reveal, Blog Hop, and Auction

Fairy's Fairy
As this enchanting little creature examines the tiny look-alike in her hands, she discovers yet another even smaller likeness, so beautiful and perfect, in the delicate hands of her twin. With joy, she sees yet another and another tiny fairy just like herself, her delight being magically repeated into infinity (Josephine Wall).

Beads of Courage  THE ART CHARM EXCHANGE and AUCTION  SUPPORTS BEADS OF COURAGE, a non-profit organization caring for children with serious illness, their families, and clinicians by helping them RECORD, TELL, and OWN their story of COURAGE through BEADS.

Hosted by Jen Cameron of GLASS ADDICTIONS,
THE BOC ART CHARM EXCHANGE & AUCTION  brought together bead and jewelry artists FOR THE CHALLENGE OF CREATING ART CHARMS to benefit Beads of Courage.

ART CHARMS are charms handcrafted with handcrafted -- the components are created by artisans, so the beads, metalwork, wire work, findings, and design are all unique and special. The book to the left shows some examples of art charms: swappables, keepsakes, trinkets.

For our Beads of Courage art charm exchange, we were challenged to create charms with the theme:  "laugh!"

Our challenge was to create a set of eleven art charms; ten would be swapped with other artists and one would be auctioned to benefit Beads of Courage.

The response to the Art Charm Exchange was huge, and so Jen organized the artists into several groups of ten and we began torching, wrapping, weaving, dapping, etching, sculpting, and firing away. When another participant had to step out of the event just before charms were due, I made an extra set of charms.
